Introduction to Local Education and Training Boards (LETBs)

The way in which the healthcare workforce is to be trained and developed was set out in the Department of Health's consultation document, Liberating the NHS, Developing the Healthcare Workforce 2010. The main focus of this document is to ensure that employers remain at the heart of decision making, are supported by clinicians, and are able to design the shape of their workforce and the way in which they develop the people they employ. Liberating the NHS Developing the Workforce, From Design to Delivery 2012, provides more detail on the new education and training system.

The key components of the new system are - Health Education England (HEE), Local Education and Training Boards (LETBs) and Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs).

On these pages we'll be keeping you updated with the way education and training develops in the coming months. Protecting and enhancing the delivery of General Practice education, training and workforce planning is crucial to the future delivery of healthcare. Londonwide LMCs is working to give voice to London’s GPs and practices as these changes happen and work to influence the shape of the emerging LETBs and AHSNs.
